Kims Reach Match Play at U.S. Junior Amateur

Hana Kim of Encino finished in a tie for sixth place in qualifying and advanced to match play in the 52nd U.S. Girls’ Junior Amateur golf championship at Pumpkin Ridge Golf Club in North Plains, Ore.

Kim, a recent graduate of Brentwood High who is headed for Northwestern, finished at 74-76--150.

Ina Kim, Hana’s sister who is a senior at Harvard-Westlake High, recovered from a poor start by equaling the best round of the second day and qualified at 82-71--153. Ina, expected to be one of the nation’s top college recruits in the fall, had more than a dozen college coaches watching her play.

Anthony Kim of Studio City, no relation to the Kim sisters, qualified for match play in the 53rd U.S. Junior Amateur, also at Pumpkin Ridge, by shooting 77-79--156.

Jeff Osborn of Glendale finished at 82-79--161 and failed to qualify, as did Brandon Christianson of Valencia, 14, youngest player in the field, who totaled 80-82--162.

BASKETBALL

* Doug Nicol became girls’ coach at Notre Dame High after resigning at Burroughs.

Nicol, who was 124-73 in eight seasons at Burroughs, replaces Keith Case, who left to become an assistant at Cal Lutheran.

* Kelly Beckler, a junior who helped Alemany to a Mission League championship last season, has transferred to Granada Hills.

Beckler, who will be a junior, and her brother Adam, a freshman guard, enrolled at Granada Hills last month.

* Earnest Williams scored 16 points but ARC Burbank, a club team of players from area schools, lost to the Portland Legends, 64-56, in the the championship game of the All-Star division in the Summer Grand Finale tournament Monday night in Las Vegas.

Other top players for ARC Burbank, which defeated the Portland Select in the quarterfinals and the Arizona Stars in the semifinals, were Brandon Duplessie of Westlake, Frank Reed of Burbank, Keith Jarbo of Burroughs, Casey Markovic of Bell-Jeff and Alex Cabagnot of Eagle Rock.

SOFTBALL

* Dudley Rooney, who guided Alemany High to 13 Mission League titles, resigned to accept a job in administration at another school.

Rooney compiled a 345-123 record in 18 seasons.

BASEBALL

* Nathan Kaup, formerly of Camarillo High, signed last week with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays.

Kaup, who attended Oklahoma State and Nevada Las Vegas, has been assigned to the short-season Hudson Valley Renegades of the New York-Penn League.

* Dan O’Gara of Paraclete High has signed with the Milwaukee Brewers and has been assigned to short-season Helena of the Pioneer League.

* Outfielder Delmon Young of Camarillo and third baseman Tim Murphy of Burroughs were selected to the U.S. youth national team.

Young, who will be a sophomore, and Murphy, who will be a junior, will compete in the Pan-Am Championships from Aug. 4-13 in Monterrey, Mexico.

Young and Murphy are among 18 players selected out of a pool of more than 1,000 players.

FOOTBALL

* Justin Wyatt, a running back and defensive back at Highland High last season, has transferred to Compton Dominguez.

Wyatt, who is a junior, rushed for 344 yards and helped the Bulldogs claim their first outright Golden League championship.

TRACK AND FIELD

* Hurdler Heather Heron and discus thrower Travis Jones are among six athletes who have signed with Cal State Northridge.

Heron placed second in the girls’ 100-meter high hurdles and 300 lows in the 4A Division finals of the Washington state championships for Eisenhower High in Yakima. She has run 14.65 in the high hurdles and 44.16 in the lows.

Jones, of San Diego Mira Mesa, won the boys’ discus in the San Diego Section championships and placed 10th in the state final. He has a best of 188-10.

Warren Davis of Bakersfield High, Linda Hannan of Vacaville, Georgia Wilkins of Victorville Silverado and Kassaundra Perkins of San Bernardino Valley College also signed with Northridge.

Davis finished 48th in the boys’ Division I final of the state cross-country championships last year but was injured during track.

Hannan placed third in the girls’ 300 lows in the Sac-Joaquin Section championships and has run 45.13.

Wilkins placed fifth in the girls’ 100 in the Division II final of the Southern Section divisional championships and Perkins finished third in the women’s 400 in the state junior college championships.

WATER POLO

* Paloma Slezak, a senior at Harvard-Westlake, was selected to the National Interscholastic Swimming Coaches’ Assn. All-American team.
