Grounded Sailboat Towed to Harbor

A 25-foot sailboat carrying five people ran aground at Emma Wood State Beach on Saturday afternoon and had to be towed back to the harbor, authorities said. No one was injured.

The incident was reported about 2:30 p.m., authorities said.

U.S. Coast Guard Petty Officer Andy Jones said the passengers, all of Ventura County, jumped off the vessel and unsuccessfully attempted to push it off the sand and back into deeper water.

Using a long tow rope, a Ventura Harbor Patrol vessel dislodged the boat and towed it back to the harbor, Jones said. Its passengers were transported to the harbor by Ventura County sheriff’s deputies.

“[The boat captain] got too close to the beach and got into the surf and lost control,” Jones said. “It could have been a lot worse than it was.”
