* Dan Donovan has been selected as an assistant coach for the Antelope Valley women’s basketball team, first-year Coach John Taylor said.

Donovan last coached as an assistant for the Valley men’s team from 1995-97. He spent the last two years earning his teaching credential. Donovan was boys’ coach at St. Genevieve and an assistant at Alemany and Bosco Tech.

“We are fortunate to get someone of Dan’s caliber,” Taylor said. “I know he did a great job for the Valley men’s team, and he is a great teacher and coach, especially of defenses.”

GOLF

* Brandon Christianson of Valencia shot two-under-par 69 in the first round to take a one-stroke lead in the boys’ division of the Compaq Junior All-Star Classic at Angel Park Golf Course in Las Vegas.

Kyle Dowden of Somis is tied for fourth at 71.

Jane Park of La Crescenta shot 73 and is tied for third in the girls’ division.

* Ina Kim of Encino and Brian O’Flaherty of Westlake Village helped the West rally in the afternoon Tuesday in the 11th Canon Cup matches at Prairie Dunes Country Club in Hutchinson, Kan.

The East holds an 8-7 lead in the three-day competition.

Kim and Kevin Na of Diamond Bar defeated Elizabeth Janangelo of West Hartford, Conn., and Brent Delahoussaye of Greer, S.C., 2 up, in the mixed foursome matches.

O’Flaherty and Kate Waggonner of Littleton, Colo., who will play for Pepperdine next season, beat Amanda Dick of Clearwater, Fla., and Mike Barbosa of St. Petersburg, Fla., 2 and 1.

Hana Kim of Encino and Matthew Rosenfeld of Plano, Texas, halved with Sarah Jacobs of Whites Creek, Tenn., and Ken Lewis of South Dennis, Mass.

The Kims and O’Flaherty played on losing four-ball matches in the morning.

SWIMMING

* Christine Creek, a sophomore at Royal High, placed second in the women’s 200-meter breaststroke in the Speedo Junior Championships West last week in San Antonio.

Creek, competing for Calabasas-based Combined Competitive Aquatics Team, recorded a senior nationals qualifying time of 2:37.91. Alexi Spann won in 2:37.77.

Clemson-bound Travis Taylor, a Crescenta Valley High graduate swimming for Pasadena-based Rose Bowl Aquatics, placed seventh in the men’s 400 freestyle in 4:05.69, eighth in the 800 freestyle in 8:32.40, 16th in the 1,500 freestyle in 16:29.71 and anchored the 800 freestyle relay team that was 13th in 8:01.21. Others in the relay were Timothy Wang, William Vandertoow and Brendan Everman.

Jana Richardson, Christina Zimma, Keiko Amano and Erin Craft of Buenaventura Swim Club placed fourth in the women’s 800 relay in 8:37.05.

Jarred Cruzat of Conejo Simi Aquatics finished fifth in a senior-national qualifying time of 58.63 in the 100 backstroke.

Alexis Sheridan, a senior at Crescenta Valley, placed seventh in the women’s 1,500 in 17.29.49 and ninth in the 800 in 9:06.29.

Aron Gyuris, a Thousand Oaks graduate headed to Brown, was seventh in the 100 butterfly in 57.80.

BASEBALL

* Jesse Michel of El Camino Real High, Ryan Malleus of Harvard-Westlake, Daniel Millman of Montclair Prep and Matt Green of Calabasas have been offensive catalysts for the Los Angeles 15- and 16-year-olds’ team in the Maccabi Youth Games in Tucson.

Glen Greenberg of Calabasas has been strong on the mound for Los Angeles, which has posted a 4-0-1 record in the double-elimination tournament. Final games are scheduled for today.

* Chris Zavatsky resigned as coach at Glendale College to become an assistant at Santa Clara University.

Zavatsky guided the Vaqueros to a 17-26 record last year.
