Top-Seeded Teams Advance at Pismo Beach

Top-seeded Lisa Arce and Barbra Fontana and second-seeded Nancy Reno and Leanne Schuster advanced to the winners’ bracket Round 4 of the Beach Volleyball America women’s tournament Saturday at Pismo Beach.

Also advancing to Round 4 was Stephanie Cox, formerly of Mission Viejo High, and partner Katy Eldridge.

Among the teams advancing through the loser’s bracket were the teams of Rachel Wacholder, formerly of Laguna Beach High, and Nancy Mason and Ali Wood, formerly of UC Irvine, and partner Danalee Bragado.

Play begins at 9 a.m. today with the final scheduled for 2:30 p.m.

TENNIS

Fifth-seeded Polina Zaretser of Brooklyn, N.Y., rallied to defeat fourth-seeded Tracy Lin of Anaheim, 3-6, 7-5, 6-3, in the singles final of the U.S. Tennis Assn. Girls’ 14 Super National Hardcourt Championships in College Park, Ga.

Ninth seeded Tory Zawacki of New Jersey defeated Lindsey Nelson of Orange, 7-5, 6-1, in the consolation quarterfinals of the girls’ 16 Super National Tennis Championships in San Diego.

TRACK AND FIELD

Elaine Iba of Trabuco Canyon won the javelin in the 30-39 age group at the USA Track and Field National Masters Championships in Eugene, Ore.

Iba won the event with a throw of 87 feet 2 inches.

Second place finishers were Laura Shapiro of Rancho Santa Margarita in the women’s 30-39 800 meters (2 minutes 48.40 seconds), Seal Beach’s Michelle Freeman in the women’s 45-49 100 (14.56 seconds), Brenda Matthews of Anaheim in the women’s 50-55 100 (14.70) and Laguna Hills’ Doug Smith in the men’s 60-65 100 (12.28).

WATER POLO

SoCal defeated Commerce, 15-6, in the gold-medal game of the 14-and-under National Junior Olympic boys’ water polo tournament at El Toro High.

In the bronze-medal game, Golden West lost to San Diego Shores, 6-2.

TRAP, a 16-and-under team, lost 4-3 to Stanford of North Hollywood in a bronze-medal match.

In the 18-and-under bracket, ORCA lost, 4-3, to Lamorinda of Tualatin Hills in the gold-medal game.
