Warehouse Gutted as Fire Sends Flames 100 Feet High

A spectacular fire that threw flames 100 feet high and sent billowing black smoke wafting across nearby neighborhoods gutted a Gardena warehouse Tuesday, fire officials said.

No one was injured in the blaze that swept through the building in the 1700 block of West 135th Street shortly after 3 p.m. Firefighters from six other departments assisted Gardena firefighters in combating the blaze, which was brought under control about 4:30 p.m., said Gardena fire investigator Michael Cunningham.

No cause for the fire has been determined, Cunningham said, and there was no immediate estimate of damage.

A Los Angeles County Fire Department hazardous materials team was sent to the scene to see if the runoff from the fire was too polluted to be allowed to run into storm drains, a Fire Department spokesman said.

Judging from the thick black smoke the fire produced, county fire spokesman Mark Tolbert said, plastics could have been in the building.
