Arizona State quarterback Ryan Kealy, who was suspended while facing drug charges, will return to the Sun Devils as a player assistant, Coach Bruce Snyder said.

Snyder said Kealy, who started all 11 regular-season games last season but tore ligaments in his right knee in the finale, will practice with the team but will not play.

That situation will be reevaluated after the team’s second game, Snyder said. He said he will monitor Kealy in the interim to determine whether he is dedicated to staying away from drugs.

Anthony Vontoure, who started nine games at cornerback as a sophomore for the Washington Huskies last season, has left the team and might not come back.

Coach Rick Neuheisel said Vontoure had been put on “a leave of absence.”

Vontoure was disciplined twice during the first 10 days of fall camp. He also was suspended last year for the Oregon game for what was believed to be a disagreement with an assistant coach.
