Last season, the 6-3, 200-pound Schwartz threw for 1,896 yards, 13 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. He was a first-team All-Sunset League selection.

* Costa Mesa running back C.J. Zuniga, last season’s Pacific Coast League MVP, has been ruled ineligible to play this season because of academic difficulties, Mustang Coach Jerry Howell said.

Zuniga, one of the top returning rushers in the county, ran for 2,053 yards last season, averaging 6.8 yards per carry.

* John Hefty, who struggled with shoulder injuries since his days at Aliso Niguel High, has ended his football playing career at Montana, his father, Mike Hefty, said.

A junior strong safety, Hefty dislocated his right shoulder during practice last week. After dislocating his shoulder numerous times last season, he underwent a second surgery in January, forcing him to miss all of spring practice. His first operation was after his freshman season at Montana.

Grizzly Coach Joe Glenn said Hefty would remain with the team as a student assistant.

* Mission Viejo quarterback Billy Hart has committed to USC, Diablo Coach Bob Johnson said. Hart completed 87.1% of his passes last season for 1,557 yards and 13 touchdowns.
