Davis, Jordan Win Final Tour Stop

Annett Davis and Jenny Johnson Jordan defeated Nancy Reno and Elaine Youngs, 15-7, to win the championship match at Beach Volleyball America’s season-ending event in San Diego on Sunday.

Davis and Johnson Jordan, who will represent the U.S. at the Sydney Olympics, won $15,000. Reno, playing in her final pro tour event, and Youngs, formerly of El Toro High, won $10,500 for second place.

Stephanie Cox, formerly of Mission Viejo High, and Katy Eldridge defeated Holly McPeak and Leanne Schuster, 15-4, to finish third.

SURFING

Two-time world champion Layne Beachley of Australia won her third Assn. of Surfing Professionals World Championship Tour event this season, taking the title at the 2000 Hossegor Rip Curl Pro Sunday in Hossegor, France.

Beachley, 28 and ranked No. 1 in the world, recorded the best ride of the event on her second wave, scoring 9.00, and finished with 19.65 points, defeating No. 2-ranked Serena Brooke of Australia, who had 17.75 points.

In the men’s event Sunday, San Clemente’s Shea Lopez and Hawaii’s Sunny Garcia, the world’s top-ranked surfer, were among those to advance to today’s quarterfinals. The semifinals and final are also today.

WATER POLO

Irvine’s Dan Hackett had nine saves as the U.S. men’s water polo team defeated Romania, 7-4, Sunday at Newport Harbor High.

Hackett and the U.S. defense held Romania scoreless in the first period and the U.S. led, 5-1, at the end of the first half.

Chris Humbert of Lodi led the U.S. with two goals. Newport Beach’s Chris Oeding, Tony Azevedo of Long Beach, Kyle Kopp of San Bernardino and Robert Lynn each added one goal.

The two teams will play again Thursday at 7:15 p.m. at El Toro High.
