Weaver’s 22 Kills Lead Long Beach State

Cheryl Weaver had 22 kills and teammate Tayyiba Haneef had 21 as the Long Beach State women’s volleyball team defeated San Jose State, 17-15, 13-15, 15-11, 15-4, Thursday night in a West Region first-round match at Santa Clara.

Weaver’s hitting percentage for the match was .472 as the 49ers (23-7) finally were able to wear down the Spartans (22-10).

Brittany Hochevar was the only other Long Beach State player who reached double figures in kills, finishing with 13.

Long Beach State faces Santa Clara tonight at 7. Santa Clara defeated Cal State Sacramento, 15-12, 15-10, 15-1.

Stanford d. Loyola Marymount, 15-11, 15-6, 15-9--The Cardinal jumped to a 5-0 lead over the Lions in the first game of their West Region first-round match at Santa Barbara and cruised to a victory.

Stanford (19-11) was led by sophomore outside hitter Logan Tom, who had 16 kills and hit .419.

As a team, the Cardinal hit .330 and limited the Lions to a miserable .089 hitting percentage. Perhaps most important, Stanford held Sarah McFarland, the nation’s leader in kills per game, to just 11.

Loyola Marymount finishes the season 20-9.

Stanford will face UC Santa Barbara in the second round tonight at 7:30.

UC Santa Barbara d. Texas San Antonio, 15-5, 15-5, 15-11--Led offensively by Danielle Bauer, who had a game-high 16 kills and five digs, the Gauchos (24-7) also used a strong defensive effort to defeat the Roadrunners (24-9) in a West Region match at Santa Barbara.
