A Ransom won the $400,000 Champion of Champions quarter horse race at Los Alamitos Race Course Sunday night.

The 4-year-old gelding ran his 2000 record to five wins in five starts, nearly assuring him the title of World Champion. Ridden by Carlos Bautista, A Ransom broke cleanly from the second post position and ran a perfect race, crossing the wire a half-length in front of Robert Gentry’s Deelish.

Willie Wanta Dash, at 20-1, prevailed over champion Separatist for third.

Sent off as the 3-5 favorite, A Ransom returned $3.40 to win.

In 19 of the previous 28 runnings of the Champion of Champions, the winner has been named World Champion. A Ransom has made a solid case for that title, winning the California Breeders Sprint Championship, Vessels Maturity and Los Alamitos Championship this year to go along with his Champion of Champions victory.
