A Redwood City software engineer is accused of stabbing a cabdriver with a butcher knife after becoming angry about his botched holiday flight plans, police said.

Prabhjot Singh Bal, 29, was arrested after allegedly stabbing a Yellow Cab driver Thursday during a trip home from San Francisco International Airport.

The cabdriver, whose name has not been released, crashed into a concrete center median on U.S. 101 near the Ralston Avenue exit in Belmont. He was treated at a hospital for unspecified injuries and released, Belmont police said.

Officers were forced to subdue the two with pepper spray after they refused to stop kicking and punching each other. Police said they found Bal to be in possession of a large kitchen knife missing its handle.

“We believe he either missed his flight or his flight got canceled,” said California Highway Patrol Officer Christopher Franks.

Charges against Bal are pending, a Belmont Police Department spokeswoman said Monday.
