Zanolli Leads Aliso Niguel Past Valencia

Zach Zanolli scored 16 points and Brandon Sievers had 13 as Aliso Niguel pulled away to defeat Valencia, 54-45, Saturday to win the championship of the Orange Holiday Classic at Chapman.

The Wolverines (10-5) led by only a point entering the fourth quarter before outscoring the Tigers, 20-10, over the final eight minutes.

“We’re pleased about how we grew as a team [in the tournament],” Aliso Niguel Coach Paul Wachenheim said. “We feel we’re making the necessary steps to become a top team.”

Hugo Hernandez and Emmanuel Ortega scored 16 points apiece for Valencia.

In consolation games at the Orange Holiday Classic:

Huntington Beach 70, Montebello Cantwell 35--Nick Austin scored 16 points and Drew Janovick had 11 for Huntington Beach (7-7).

Loara 65, Irvine 59--The score was tied after three quarters, then Bryce Sheldon scored eight of his 14 points and Chris Moses seven of his 17 in the fourth quarter for the Saxons (11-4). Jontel Carter scored 16 points and David Cox 12 for Irvine (9-6).

In a semifinal game at the Myrtle Beach (S.C.) tournament:

Mater Dei 58, Brunswick (Ga.) Glynn Academy 56 (OT)--Cedric Bozeman made two baskets in the final two minutes of overtime to draw the Monarchs even, then he scored on a goaltending call with four seconds to go for Mater Dei.

Bozeman finished with 26 points for Mater Dei, the top-ranked team in Orange County. The Monarchs will play Louisville (Ky.) Ballard in tonight’s championship game.

Mater Dei center Jamal Sampson, who has the flu, scored two points in seven minutes and is not expected to play tonight.

In a semifinal game at the Brea Olinda tournament:

Downey Warren 54, Brea Olinda 50--Ryan Moore had 20 points for the Wildcats (7-6) in the loss.

In a consolation game:

Cerritos Gahr 59, Esperanza 58 (OT)--Mark Lovein had 17 points and J.D. White had 14 for Esperanza (6-8).

In a semifinal game at the Century Holiday Classic:

Century 42, La Habra 41--Matt Napier scored 15 points and Chris Ferretti had 12 rebounds for the Centurions (9-5), who advanced to the final.

In a consolation game:

Saddleback 41, Santa Ana 40 (OT)--Ismael Isias scored the go-ahead basket for Saddleback with one minute remaining in overtime and a Santa Ana three-point attempt at the buzzer failed. George Guerrero had 20 points for Saddleback.

In the semifinals of the Estancia tournament:

Edison 79, Estancia 67--Beau Roquemore and Matt Gonzales scored 20 points each for Edison, which will play El Dorado in today’s championship game. Gonzales made five three-pointers and Roquemore had three for the Chargers.

Eliasar Maldonado scored 20 points for Estancia (4-7).

No. 7 El Dorado 95, Kennedy 54--David Patten scored 36 points and Kyle Miller had 17 for El Dorado (14-2), which outscored Kennedy, 49-22, in the second half.

In championship game at the Katella tournament:

Harbor City Narbonne 70, Katella 50--Phillip Tyson scored 15 points and Marcus Espinoza added 11 for Katella, which was outscored, 56-36, in the final three quarters.

Reggie Simms scored 16 points for Narbonne (10-3). Katella is 9-4.

In the consolation final at the Las Vegas Prep Championships:

Henderson (Nev.) Green Valley 57, Fullerton 41--Virgil Bobar scored 12 points for Fullerton, which was outscored, 28-14, in the second half. The Indians are 12-4.

In a third-round game at the Marin Christmas Classic:

Sonoma Valley 61, Servite 59--Down by 14 at halftime, the Friars (9-4) made it close with a 19-9 fourth-quarter run. Billy Burfeind scored 15 points for Servite.

In a semifinal game at the Mt. Carmel tournament:

Sonora 72, Oceanside 69--Led by Jacob Trejo and Larence Knight, who each scored 19 points, Sonora (13-2) overcame an 11-point first-quarter deficit to advance.

In the semifinals of the North Salinas Invitational:

Trabuco Hills 81, Soledad 37--The Mustangs play Salinas Alisal today at noon in the championship game. Marcus Wooden scored 18 points and John Baggerly had 12 for Trabuco Hills (9-5).

In the third-place game at the Reston (Va.) South Lakes tournament:

Reston (Va.) South Lakes 82, University 71--University’s Hiro Christoph scored a game-high 23 points and Bobby Gomez added 13 for the Trojans, whose 31 fourth-quarter points weren’t enough.
