Three-Run Homer by Mendoza in 9th Propels Northridge

Adrian Mendoza hit a three-run home run with one out in the ninth inning to give host Cal State Northridge a 5-3 nonconference victory over Cal State Sacramento on Saturday.

Starter Bill Murphy had six strikeouts in three innings, but left-hander Andy Davidson (2-0), who faced only two batters in the ninth, picked up the win.

Northridge trailed, 3-1, in the sixth inning when Eric Horvat singled to score Tim Coltey for his second run batted in of the game.

Horvat, a junior from Hart High, had two hits. Coltey, a freshman, had two doubles and scored twice for the Matadors (3-3).

Fresno State 7, Pepperdine 6--Jared Pitney hit a two-run triple in the sixth inning but the Waves (1-4) lost a nonconference game at Fresno.

COLLEGE SOFTBALL

Vanguard 8-7, Cal Lutheran 5-6--Jennifer Lemons had three hits and an RBI in the second game but the Regals were swept at Cal Lutheran.

Lemons had three strikeouts and gave up one earned run in the opener for Cal Lutheran (0-2).

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Oxnard 68, Nordhoff 24--Sara Wilkins had 14 points and Memory Rhone added 10 points and 11 rebounds for the Yellowjackets (19-6) in a nonleague game at Oxnard.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

Stoneridge Prep 90, Glendale Adventist 48--James William had 20 points and 13 rebounds, and 6-foot-8 freshman Rene Shabastri had 14 points, 15 rebounds and four blocked shots to spark the Tigers (15-3) in a nonleague victory at Stoneridge Prep.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Canyons 66, West L.A. 59--Leanne Bennett had 20 points and 10 rebounds for the Cougars in a Western State Conference Southern Division victory at West Los Angeles.

Tasha Allen had 19 points for Canyons (21-6, 9-0), which can clinch a share of the division title with a victory against Citrus on Wednesday.

Wakia Howard had 22 points for West L.A. (16-11, 4-5).

Bakersfield 88, Valley 85--Carrie Miller had 28 points and 20 rebounds for Valley but fouled out with two minutes left in a WSC Southern Division loss. Valley (15-12, 3-5) led, 82-81, when Miller fouled out.

Sugar Pacana made a three-point basket with seven seconds left to pull the Monarch’s to within 85-86.

Chante Gifford, who had 18 points, 10 assists and 10 rebounds, missed a three-point shot at the buzzer.

Bakersfield is 19-9, 6-3 in conference play.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Antelope Valley 96, Victor Valley 54--Jimmy White had 14 points and 13 rebounds in a WSC Southern Division game. Twelve of White’s rebounds came at the offensive end.

Three Marauders had 10 or more rebounds as Antelope Valley (16-13, 6-5) outrebounded Victor Valley (0-24, 0-10), 43-53.

Valley 66, Bakersfield 51--Felix Lang scored 13 of his 17 points in the second half for Valley in a WSC South Division game.

Mike Crawford scored all 14 of his points in the second half, and added 10 rebounds for the Monarchs.

Valley (20-7, 7-1) trailed, 29-23, at halftime.
