El Dorado Dominates Empire Wrestling Championships

El Dorado qualified 13 wrestlers for the Southern Section Division III individual finals and won seven titles at the Empire League championships Thursday.

The Golden Hawks finished with 234 points to win the team title as well.

Craig Rineer (119 pounds), Chuck Rust (125), Daniel Dubois (145), Eric Aguilar (152), Luke Szabo (160), Danny Pierro (171) and heavyweight Joe Faraone won league titles for El Dorado.

Loara was second with 167 points. In the lower weights, Orlando and Josh Galvan won titles at 103 and 112, respectively, and in the upper weights, Jeremy and Joe Ellis took the 189- and 215-pound titles. The Saxons qualified 10 wrestlers for the section finals.

Kennedy was third with 110 points, with Christian Ramirez (130) and Frank Richmond (140) winning titles.

In the Golden West League finals:

Santa Ana wins--The Saints had 10 champions and advanced 13 wrestlers to the Division II finals as Coach Scott Glabb won his 10th consecutive league title. Alex Becerra (171) and Gilbert Melendez (125) each won his second consecutive league title.

In Freeway League boys’ soccer:

Fullerton 2, Troy 1 (OT)--Fullerton’s Margarito Valdez scored with two minutes left in overtime as the Indians (16-5-4, 7-1-2) won the league title. Daseth Hernandez also scored for Fullerton.

La Habra 2, Buena Park 1 (OT)--Bret Weyer’s goal in the seventh minute of overtime lifted La Habra (10-6-5, 5-3-2). Despite the loss, Buena Park makes the playoffs as the third-place team.

Sonora 3, Sunny Hills 0--Felipe Uribe recorded his sixth league shutout and Joe Martinez, Kyle Warsinski and Matt Catone scored for the visiting Raiders (11-5-4, 6-2-2). Sunny Hills fell to 4-13-3, 1-8-1.

In the Garden Grove League:

Pacifica 1, Garden Grove 0--Derek Crocker’s goal 10 minutes into the game gave Pacifica a third-place finish in league. Keith Ruegger assisted on Crocker’s goal for Pacifica (14-6-3, 8-2-2).

Santiago 6, Bolsa Grande 0--Santiago clinched its third consecutive league title as Angel Rivera scored two goals for the Cavaliers (15-4-4, 9-1-2).

In the Olympic League:

Orange Lutheran 3, Calvary Chapel 2--Jon Talmage scored his third goal of the game on a penalty kick in the final minute for second-place Orange Lutheran (14-6-2, 8-1-1).

In Freeway League girls’ water polo:

Buena Park 10, La Habra 3--Kelli Britton scored three of her five goals in the fourth quarter as third-place Buena Park (11-11, 6-4) outscored visiting La Habra, 6-1.

In the Orange League:

Valencia 6, Magnolia 5--Janine Gay’s goal with 27 seconds to play gave Valencia a 6-5 lead and forced a playoff for third place today against the Sentinels at Savanna.

In the South Coast League:

Mission Viejo 6, San Clemente 5--Shannon Wilkeson’s goal late in the fourth quarter broke a 5-5 tie and helped propel Mission Viejo (13-11, 3-2) into the playoffs.
