Surveying to Start for New Lane on 405

If weather permits, the state Department of Transportation plans to begin surveying work this weekend for an additional northbound lane on the San Diego Freeway through part of Sepulveda Pass.

A Caltrans spokeswoman said the new lane would run for two miles between Mulholland Drive and the Ventura Freeway. It is intended to ease congestion at the 101-405 interchange.

The survey work will close one northbound lane, said Margie Tiritilli of Caltrans.

The work will include soil surveys and planning for sound walls, she said. Construction is scheduled to begin in the spring of 2001 and wrap up in the fall of 2002.

Eventually, the added lane should help unclog the San Diego-Ventura freeway junction, which handles about 530,000 vehicles per day and ranks as one of the state’s busiest, Tiritilli said. She said surveying work could be delayed by inclement weather or if the work caused a major backup.
