Curry’s Return Possible

Standout guard Edniesha Curry, who quit the Cal State Northridge women’s basketball team three weeks ago, might return, Coach Frozena Jerro said.

At least, Jerro and Curry are still discussing the possibility, the coach said.

“At this point, I honestly don’t know,” Jerro said. “I don’t want to say. We will announce it [if it happens].”

Curry, most valuable player of the Big Sky Conference tournament last season, left the team Jan. 24 after repeated quarrels with Jerro and assistants, which came to a head Jan. 21 after a Matador loss at Montana.

Since Curry’s departure, Northridge (12-8, 6-4 in conference play) is 1-3 and has slipped to third place.

The Matadors, defending Big Sky champions, play first-place Montana (17-5, 10-1) on Thursday night at Northridge.

Montana has won eight in a row.

Jerro declined to speculate when Curry might return. Curry will not play against Montana, Jerro said.

“Right now, I just want to focus on my team and Montana,” Jerro said. “She’s come to me and we’ve had discussions, that’s it.”

Shakira Bryant, expected to help fill the void when Curry left, remains ineligible while awaiting results of a grade. Bryant did not play in a 67-52 loss to Northern Arizona on Saturday night.

Inclement weather Tuesday postponed the renewal of one of Southern California’s most competitive college baseball rivalries.

Long Beach State (3-3) and Cal State Northridge will play a nonconference game today at Northridge--weather permitting--in the teams’ 88th meeting since 1959.

Northridge leads the series, 44-43.

Adrian Mendoza, a senior first baseman for Northridge, is batting .417 with two home runs and six runs batted in in seven games.

Big difference from last season, when Mendoza struggled to make contact. During one stretch, he struck out in eight consecutive plate appearances, including five in one game against USC.
