4 Children Injured as Bus Runs Off Road

An MTA bus carrying 36 middle school students ran off a road in Rolling Hills Estates Wednesday afternoon, crashed through a railing and slid down an embankment, causing minor injuries to four children.

The accident, which is under investigation, was not caused by the heavy rains, said Sheriff’s Lt. Paul Sylvia.

“The driver stopped the bus . . . she might have been experiencing some mechanical difficulties,” Sylvia said. “The bus rolled down a hill and went into a small ravine. At this time, we don’t know what caused the bus to roll. It was either human error, a mechanical failure or maybe a combination of the two.”

The students were treated at the scene by paramedics and taken to the Lomita sheriff’s station, where they were picked up by their parents.

The MTA bus, which careened off the side of Palos Verdes Estate Drive East near Harbor Sight Drive, has a contract to transport students to bus stops.
