Feterik Looking for Better Finish

Share

It wasn’t a fitting finish to his Brigham Young football career.

Quarterback Kevin Feterik, who played at Los Alamitos High, had an outstanding senior season, but it ended poorly in Monday’s Motor City Bowl.

Marshall’s strong defense overwhelmed Feterik and BYU, 21-3. Feterik injured his shoulder when he was sacked in the second quarter and left the game early in the second half because of the injury.

Feterik completed six of 11 passes for 125 yards. He entered the game averaging 323 yards passing this season.

“I’m just sorry I got hurt, because I thought we still could have moved the ball on them,” Feterik said. “We were only down 7-3 when I got hurt, but I just couldn’t go in the third quarter.”

Pass protection had been a problem for the Cougars. BYU gave up up 37 sacks during the regular season and eight in the bowl game.

Feterik, spending the New Year’s Day weekend at home, said the injury is not serious, and he is planning to compete in two postseason all-star games this month, beginning with the Hula Bowl in Honolulu on Jan. 23. He also plans to play in an all-star game in Orlando the following week.

“I’m looking forward to those games and having the opportunity to play with other all-stars from different places,” Feterik said. “They should have a lot to do with the draft.”

Feterik finished fifth among BYU’s all-time career passing leaders with 8,055 yards. Ty Detmer is the school’s all-time leader with 15,031 yards. Jim McMahon is second at 9,536 yards.

Feterik passed for 3,679 yards this season, including the bowl game. He ranked 15th nationally in passing efficiency and seventh in total offense during the regular season.

Tony Hartley, who was Feterik’s top receiver at Los Alamitos High, caught seven passes for 113 yards Friday to help Oregon defeat Minnesota, 24-20, in the Sun Bowl.

Hartley improved his school career receiving yardage record to 2,744 yards. Oregon running back Reuben Droughns (Anaheim High) had 95 yards in 21 carries despite sitting out a big part of the second half because of leg cramps.

Another former Orange County quarterback, sophomore John Leonard of Arizona State saw only limited playing time in the Aloha Bowl because he was one of 10 Sun Devil players who had food poisoning.

Leonard, who played at Mater Dei, completed five of 10 passes for 28 yards. For the season, Leonard was 29 of 74 for 340 yards.

Two former Orange County athletes were key players for the Westmont College women’s volleyball team that reached the NAIA national tournament semifinals this season. Wendy Wilkins, a senior outsider hitter from San Clemente, finished as the school’s all-time career leader in serving aces with 258 and in digs with 1,376. She ranks fifth in kills (1,288). Lara Childress, a senior middle blocker from Trabuco Hills High, ranks third in career blocks with 338. The team finished with a 28-10 record.

Guard Clay McKnight (Mater Dei) is off to a good start in his senior basketball season at Pacific. McKnight, who transferred from UC Irvine, leads the Tigers in scoring with an average of 13 points a game. McKnight has made 27 of 75 three-point shots (36%) and is 29 of 29 on free throws.
