BIG PLAY

Ron Dayne’s 64-yard third-quarter run that set up Wisconsin’s go-ahead touchdown.

SETTING IT UP

Trailing 9-3, Dayne runs up the middle of the field, breaking two tackles and running 64 yards on the second play of the third quarter.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Dayne had been held to 46 first-half yards by Stanford’s defense, which contained Dayne by switching to the strong side before most obvious running plays. Dayne, who prefers to run to the strong side, adjusted at halftime and began running to the weak side. Stanford never adjusted.

KEY TO THE PLAY

“At halftime, we had to do a lot of looking in the mirror because we didn’t get anything going in the first half,” Wisconsin offensive lineman Mark Tauscher said. “But the run was obviously huge. I just took my step, sealed off the linebacker and I saw [Dayne] in the open field.”

IN THEIR WORDS

“We just got real motivated and I saw a hole and just ran through it,” Dayne said. “The line did its job, the receivers did their job and I just ran.”

“He’s a Heisman Trophy winner and a three-time MVP,” Wisconsin Coach Barry Alvarez said. “We’ve come to expect Ron Dayne to play well. He’s been a huge part of our offense.”

FROM THE OTHER SIDE

“Ron Dayne made a few big runs and broke a couple of tackles,” Stanford Coach Tyrone Willingham said. “No one has been able to stop Ron Dayne, but I thought our young men made a good account of themselves tonight.”

THE SIGNIFICANCE

Two plays after Dayne’s big run, he scored on a four-yard touchdown run, giving the Badgers a 10-9 lead, which eventually led to their 17-9 victory.
