Police were trying to determine Wednesday how an unidentified women had been murdered after a transient found a duffel bag stuffed with a female body.

About 4:30 a.m. Tuesday, a transient flagged police down in the area of Central Avenue and Brazil Street and told them he had seen what he believed was a duffel bag with a human foot, authorities said.

As they got closer to the large duffel bag, officers believed it contained an entire body, judging by its shape, officials said. They called homicide detectives and took the bag to the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office, said Compton Capt. Danny Sneed.

The victim appeared to have several stab wounds and markings on her ankles, said Frank Wheaton, a Compton spokesman.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Compton Police Department at (310) 605-6505.
