Logan Is Hit and Miss as Grant Wins

Share

Bailed out by a clutch rebound and follow-up shot by Brandon Edison of Grant High in regulation, Ryan Logan went from goat to hero in a matter of minutes against Birmingham on Wednesday night.

Logan sank two free throws with eight seconds left in overtime to secure a 61-58 victory over the Patriots in a nonleague game at Birmingham.

But it wasn’t the point guard’s first chance to ice the victory for the Lancers.

With Grant trailing, 48-46, Logan was fouled on a three-point shot with 11 seconds left in regulation.

Logan, an 89% free throw shooter, missed all three shots.

“To miss those three in the clutch is a shock,” said Logan, who had five of his 20 points in overtime.

But Edison grabbed the rebound on the third miss and converted a follow-up shot with seven seconds left to tie it, 48-48.

“He saved my butt,” Logan said. “But I knew if I didn’t come through, someone else on the team would because we are a real balanced team.”

In a game that featured nine ties and 12 lead changes, Birmingham (5-9) gave Grant all it could handle.

“They out-hustled us in the paint,” said Coach Howard Levine of Grant, who watched his team squander a nine-point lead late in the third quarter.

“We haven’t had that kind of aggression on us in the paint all season. They were really aggressive on the boards.”

Grant (12-2), ranked No. 6 in the region by The Times, opened the overtime period with an 8-0 run but struggled down the stretch.

Trailing, 59-53, with 40 seconds remaining, Birmingham got within a point 28 seconds later on Nick Halic’s three-pointer and Delta Moore’s layup following a Grant turnover.

“Even in overtime, we had it controlled and then made some real bad mistakes in the clutch,” Levine said.

Birmingham’s Aaron Burgin--who did not score--missed a three-point, turnaround-jumper from the baseline as time expired.

DeWayne Anderson, Grant’s top scorer who averages 13.2 points a game, scored 11 of his 15 points in the first half.

Edison, who had eight rebounds, scored all of his 11 points after halftime.

Halic finished with 13 points for the Patriots, and Moore and Mshak Ghazarian each added 11.
