Master’s Crushes La Verne on Penberthy’s Quick Work
Guard Joey Penberthy scored 30 points in 26 minutes to help The Master’s defeat La Verne, 108-70, Saturday night in the championship game of the UC San Diego tournament.
Penberthy made 10 of 13 shots, including six of seven three-point attempts.
Kenny Jackson made seven of 10 shots, including four of five three-point shots, to finish with 23 points. He had five steals.
Master’s (16-2), ranked No. 10 in NAIA Division I, made 15 three-point shots and out-rebounded NCAA Division III La Verne, 46-33.
Robbie Leark scored 25 points for La Verne (6-5).
Valley 78, Hancock 75--Isaac Williamson had 19 points and 10 rebounds for host Valley (14-5) in a Western State Conference interdivision game.
Valley led 28-17 at one point in the first half, but Hancock closed within 42-40 at the half.
Mark Copeland made a three-point shot to pull Hancock within 75-73 with 1:27 to play.
Michael Crawford scored 12 points for Valley and Jerrohn Jordan had 11.
Adrian Parks and Keith Childs each had 21 points for Hancock (4-12).
Glendale 78, Bakersfield 63--Clayton Powdrill scored seven of his 19 points and Sean Stroud had six of his 13 points in the final five minutes for host Glendale in a WSC Southern Division opener.
Bakersfield closed within 59-58 on consecutive three-point baskets by Ozzie Lockhart, who had 24 points, but Glendale closed with a 19-5 run, sparked by Powdrill and Stroud, for its sixth consecutive victory.
Powdrill made four three-point baskets.
Canyons 94, Santa Monica 85--Rashard Walker scored six of his 11 points in overtime for host Canyons in a WSC Southern Division game.
Michael Goldman of Canyons (8-12, 1-1) made a three-point basket with 13 seconds left to tie the score, 80-80, in regulation. Goldman finished with 18 points.
Santa Monica is 14-6, 1-1.
Mt. San Jacinto 75, Antelope Valley 72--Jimmy White had 19 points and nine rebounds for host Antelope Valley in a Foothill Conference game.
Michael Callaway made five three-point baskets and finished with 17 points for Antelope Valley (11-9, 1-1), which had four players score in double figures.
Moises Alverez scored 33 points and Eric Ford added 25 for Mt. San Jacinto.
Cal Lutheran 82, Benedictine 71--Justin Muth had 25 points and 10 rebounds for Cal Lutheran (7-3) in the final of the Cal Lutheran tournament.
Cal Lutheran’s Pastor Cuenca scored 22 points. He was selected to the all-tournament team.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Ventura 86, Hancock 29--Renae Hofmann had 17 points and seven assists for Ventura in a WSC Northern Division game.
Jackie Rhetta of Ventura (21-0, 2-0) led all scorers with 20 points.
Canyons 85, Santa Monica 71--Tasha Allen scored 25 points and LeAnne Bennett and Siosi Tuli each scored 12 for host Canyons (14-6, 2-0) in a WSC Southern Division game.
Tuli had 13 rebounds and teammate Becca Voigt had 10.
Judy Diaz and Alana Hansen each had 16 points and Ava Mozafari, a Taft High graduate, scored 10 points for Santa Monica (11-6, 1-1).
Cal Lutheran 67, The Master’s 57--Anna Lindseth and Haley Jones each scored 15 points for Cal Lutheran (6-5) in the championship game of the Cal Lutheran tournament.
Lesley DuBois had 18 points and 10 rebounds for the Mustangs (12-9), who committed 25.
