Murdock Makes Point of Staying Ready

During the off-season, the Clippers made upgrading their point-guard position a priority.
After not re-signing Sherman Douglas and Darrick Martin and waiving Pooh Richardson, the Clippers hoped their search was over when they acquired veteran Eric Murdock from the New Jersey Nets.
But Murdock has been slowed by several injuries. And though he’s healthy now, Coach Chris Ford still gives the majority of playing time to Troy Hudson, who earned a roster spot late last season after playing in the Continental Basketball Assn.
“Troy’s done a good job delivering the ball,” Ford said. “He still makes mistakes sometimes when he leaves his feet. But overall he’s done a good job. You can’t ask for much more out of the kid.”
Murdock has had to adjust to being a backup. One night he might play 15 to 20 minutes and the next he may get a DNP-Coach’s Decision.
“It’s been frustrating because I am not getting consistent minutes,” said Murdock, who has played with seven teams in nine NBA seasons.
“But I’m not going to get down. I’m in the NBA and this is my dream. I can’t worry about things I do not have control over. I want to contribute on a regular basis. This is where I’m at and I have to be ready whenever [Ford] calls on me.”
Saturday night, Murdock, who is averaging only 4.7 points and 2.5 rebounds, played against the Indiana Pacers and made the most of his opportunity.
Murdock scored four points and had one assist in nine minutes.

The Clippers, who have a 3-13 road record, start a four-game trip at Cleveland on Tuesday and then will play at Boston, New Jersey and Utah.
