Arizona State guard Eddie House scored 61 points to tie Lew Alcindor’s Pacific 10 record and led Arizona State to a 111-108 victory over California in double overtime Saturday at Berkeley.

House had the most points by a major college player since Kansas State’s Askia Jones scored 62 against Fresno State in 1994.

“I just came out and competed,” said House, whose stunning performance came before many relatives and friends on hand to see the former prep star from nearby Hayward High.

House made 18 of 30 shots--including seven of 10 on three-point attempts, and was successful on 18 of 19 free throws in surpassing his own school scoring record and tying Alcindor’s 33-year-old Pacific 10 record. Alcindor scored 61 points in UCLA’s victory over Washington State in regulation on Feb. 25, 1967.

House had the final say in the outcome, making two free throws with 2.9 seconds remaining in the second overtime. Joe Shipp’s desperation three-point shot at the buzzer hit the rim and bounced away.

After California (9-5, 0-2 in the Pacific 10) had gone ahead, 103-99, in the second overtime, House made two jump shots and a pair of free throws in a 10-0 run Arizona State (9-4, 1-1).

Said California Coach Ben Braun said: “You wait for a kid like that to fatigue or to start missing some shots, but he did neither.”

House surpassed his previous school mark of 46 points against San Diego State Dec. 18. He also had a 42-point game against Penn State Dec. 29.

Oregon 67, Oregon State 49--Forward A.D. Smith had 22 points to lead the Ducks (10-2) past the host Beavers (8-4) in the conference opener for both teams.
