Jerome Hunter, president of San Diego City College, has been appointed chancellor of the North Orange County Community College District.

Hunter will take office in February. As chancellor, he will head a district of 65,000 students that includes Fullerton and Cypress colleges and a school of continuing education.

He takes over from Tom Harris Jr., who retired June 30 after nine years as chancellor.

The Board of Trustees unanimously selected Hunter as chancellor in December after interviewing five finalists a selection committee of faculty, staff, students and community members had recommended. Hunter was president of the San Diego college for six years, and was president of San Diego Miramar College for four years before that.

His new job is a return to Orange County for Hunter, who served as a political science teacher and in a number of administrative positions in the Rancho Santiago Community College District.

He also received an associate degree in liberal arts from Santa Ana College. He received a bachelor’s degree in political science from UC Riverside, a master’s degree in urban studies from Occidental College in Eagle Rock and a doctorate in higher education from USC.

“My wife, Adleane, and I are in a unique position to be leaving a home here where we’ve made many friends and grown professionally, to return home to Orange County,” Hunter said.
