A 16-year-old boy has been arrested on suspicion of shooting toward a group of youths who were chasing him, Simi Valley police said Friday.

The boy was in Rancho Simi Park near the Arroyo Simi on Thursday afternoon when he was confronted by three rival gang members, according to Simi Valley Police Sgt. Bob Gardner.

The teen ran through the park and the flood control channel north of the park and picked up a gun he had stashed in the bushes, Gardner said.

“He shot in the direction of them,” Gardner said, then tried to fire another shot but the gun malfunctioned.

The boy was arrested a block from the scene later in the afternoon.

Investigators believe a drive-by shooting Thursday night was in retaliation for the first shooting.

About 10:30 p.m., police said, shots fired from a car struck a second car in the 1100 block of Crosby Avenue. There were no injuries, but a 1980 Ford Taurus received about $200 in damage, Gardner said.
