* Troy Thomas, defensive coordinator at Westlake High who was a key figure in helping the Warriors win their first Southern Section championship, has resigned to become a graduate assistant at Fresno State.
Thomas wants to obtain his teacher’s credential so he can become a head coach and will take classes at Fresno State.
He spent one season at Westlake. Thomas earlier was an assistant coach at Hawaii and defensive coordinator at Crespi.
VOLLEYBALL
* Nick Marbach, an opposite hitter from Hoover High, has transferred to Long Beach State and will sit out one season.
Marbach was one of the top players at San Diego State last season.
BASEBALL
* Bob Scanlan, a 1984 Harvard-Westlake High graduate, was signed to a minor-league contract by the Milwaukee Brewers and invited to spring training, the National League team announced.
