Brea Topples Clovis West at Tournament

Brea Olinda’s Chelsea Trotter scored 23 points and pulled down 12 rebounds as the fourth-ranked Ladycats defeated Fresno Clovis West, 65-51, in the Fresno Buchanan Martin Luther King girls’ basketball tournament Saturday.

Jackie Lord scored nine first-quarter points and Trotter had eight as Brea Olinda (11-5) jumped out to a 23-6 advantage.

Clovis West’s only threat came in the third quarter when it closed to within 10 points, but forward Daveri Bonnewitz hit two key jumpers for the Ladycats. Lord finished with 16 points and Jill Trader had 12 for Brea.

In nonleague girls’ basketball:

Capistrano Valley 46, Woodbridge 41--Nicki Howard and Hallie Steube each scored 14 points for Capistrano Valley (12-6). Bryn Riley led Woodbridge with 13 points and Natalie Quinn had three three-pointers.

No. 8 El Toro 62, Santa Margarita 44--Giuliana Mendiola had 33 points and 10 rebounds and Sarah Brown scored 12 points, all on three-pointers, for host El Toro (11-5). The Chargers, after being tied at halftime, outscored Santa Margarita, 38-20, in the second half.

Venessa Ferragamo led the Eagles (13-6) with 13 points.

No. 9 Rosary 49, Alhambra 31--Rosary (16-5) outscored Alhambra (11-8) by 29-12 in the first half. Maggie Barnett led the Royals with 17 points and Jen Farner had nine points and 14 rebounds.

No. 2 San Clemente 58, Huntington Beach 48--Kimberly Noble and Kalena Jackson combined to score 18 of 20 fourth-quarter points for San Clemente, which outscored Huntington Beach by 10 points in the final period. Noble finished with 19 points and 20 rebounds and Jackson scored 13 points for the Tritons (16-2).

Amy Sanders led the Oilers (9-8) with 19 points.

In the Katella girls’ soccer tournament:

Sunny Hills 3, Loara 0--Simi Phull scored twice as Sunny Hills (15-4-1) defended its tournament title. Loara is 12-3-1. Phull also scored three goals in an earlier game against Magnolia (2-6). The Lancers defeated the Sentinels in a semifinal, 5-0.

In the Santa Barbara girls’ water polo tournament:

Santa Barbara 6, No. 3 Foothill 5--Thalia Munro’s goal as time expired broke a 5-5 tie in the championship game. The game appeared headed for overtime after Foothill’s Johanna Graf scored with 35 seconds left to tie the score, 5-5.

Gabbie Domanic led Foothill (10-3) with two goals and Emily Feher had nine saves.

In the semifinals earlier, Graf’s goal with 1:55 seconds left gave Foothill a 6-5 victory over fifth-ranked Irvine.

Agnes Prawdzik led Irvine (9-2) with three goals; Graf and Brittaney Hayes each had two.
