Hines Leaves Early in Game and Thinks His Toe Is Broken

Share

Starting shooting guard Rico Hines played only four minutes Saturday after suffering an injury to his right big toe early against Arizona State, an injury the Bruins are calling a sprain for now but that Hines thinks is actually a broken bone.

“I broke my foot before and it feels the same way,” he said. “That throbbing. Hopefully I’ll get some good news on Monday. But I’m preparing for the worst.”

Hines said the foot will be X-rayed Monday, which also gives the medical staff enough time to determine if that step is necessary, depending how it swells or the joints stiffen before then.

It is also unknown how long he would be sidelined, if at all, if a break is found.

Hines suffered the injury on the Bruins’ second possession, when his right foot jammed into Arizona State’s Eddie House. Hines, in the third game of his second stint of the season as a starter, tried to return to the game after a brief rest, but soon left again.

“It was too much,” he said of the pain. “One time I went up for a rebound and came down and got a sharp pain. It was like, ‘Man, there’s a whole lot of games left after this.’ ”
