Mission Viejo Prevails in Overtime

Travis Niesen scored 21 points to help Mission Viejo escape with a 61-59 overtime victory over Dana Hills in a South Coast League boys’ basketball game Wednesday at Dana Hills High.

Dana Hills’ Andrew Spaulding, who had a team-high 14 points, missed a potential game-winning three-pointer as overtime ended.

Dana Hills (6-16, 0-6 in league) trailed by 13 points at halftime but rallied to send the game into overtime when Mitch Mathews made a three-pointer to tie the score, 53-53, with two seconds left in regulation.

Francis Ireifej scored 14 points for Mission Viejo (11-11, 2-4).

In other South Coast League games:

No. 7 El Toro 72, Trabuco Hills 52--Ashkan Nazeri scored 19 points to lead visiting El Toro (18-4, 6-0).

Evan Fields scored 16 points for Trabuco Hills (10-10, 3-3).

Capistrano Valley 65, San Clemente 48--Pete DeCasas scored 11 of his 22 points in the third quarter as Capistrano Valley (14-8, 4-2) outscored visiting San Clemente, 22-11, to take a 14-point lead.

In the Orange League:

No. 10 Brea Olinda 71, Valencia 63--Chase Ulicny had 17 points, making 13 of 14 free throws, and six assists for the host Wildcats (16-5, 5-0), which took control with a 25-point third quarter.

Magnolia 57, Anaheim 53--Magnolia took a 16-11 lead after the first quarter and never trailed. Stia Asoau scored 14 points and Geoffrey Clayton had 13 for the Sentinels (16-4, 3-2). Stephen Miller scored 24 points for Anaheim (12-8, 2-3).

Savanna 53, Western 48--Allan Purnell had 26 points and 11 rebounds for host Savanna (9-12, 2-3).

Savanna trailed, 13-11, after the first quarter, but took the lead early in the second quarter and never trailed again. Robert Turner scored 15 points for Western (6-13, 0-5) with 15 points.

In nonleague boys’ basketball:

No. 2 Ocean View 58, Santa Ana Valley 42--Marques Crane had 17 points as host Ocean View (20-2) took a 37-17 halftime lead.

Ocean View’s Jeremiah Bell, a senior forward who averages 17 points and 11 rebounds, did not play because of an ankle injury, but is expected to return for Friday’s Golden West League game against Saddleback. Torin Beeler scored 12 points in his first game since transferring back to Ocean View from Calvary Chapel.

Corona del Mar 60, Saddleback 33--Senior Kevin Hansen had 16 points, 12 rebounds and six steals for visiting Corona del Mar (15-6).
