14 Youth Groups Receive Surplus Olympics Funds

Fourteen organizations involved in youth sports activities have received grants totaling $1.5 million from the Amateur Athletic Foundation of Los Angeles.

Kids in Sports, which offers sports programs at 14 sites at schools and parks, will receive $487,000. The activities serve more than 10,000 youths, ages 7 to 17, primarily in inner-city areas, foundation officials said this week.

The AAF-National Junior Tennis league will receive $150,000 for low-cost instructional programs, reaching more than 6,000 youngsters at 150 sites.

Receiving $31,480 will be the Starlings Volley Clubs, to expand free club volleyball programs for girls in Hollywood, South Los Angeles, Inglewood and Compton.

Among other grants, a $50,000 grant will help complete construction of an all-weather track at Pasadena City College.

The Amateur Athletic Foundation was set up with surplus funds from the 1984 Olympics.
