Cal Lutheran Comes Out Swinging and Sweeps

Cal Lutheran opened its baseball season Friday by sweeping Simpson College, 17-1 and 16-0, in a nonconference doubleheader in Thousand Oaks.
Simpson committed 14 errors and had 10 wild pitches.
Ryan Yoshiwara had five hits and five Kingsmen pitchers struck out 21 and allowed five hits.
Backup first baseman Andy Luttrell doubled, homered and drove in five runs in two at-bats.
Dan Loyd and Eric Medina hit home runs in the first game.
GIRLS’ SOCCER
Chaminade 2, Louisville 1--Tara Donoghue scored in the last minute to give the Eagles a Mission League victory at Chaminade.
Kristina Chew also scored for Chaminade (15-4-3, 4-0-2), ranked No. 5 in the region by The Times.
Nicki Spina scored for Louisville (10-5-8, 2-4-1).
Hart 9, Burbank 0--Ali Pavoni and Becca Gould each scored twice and combined for seven assists for the Indians in a Foothill League game at Burbank.
Pavoni had five assists for Hart (10-4, 7-0), ranked No. 7.
El Camino Real 5, Taft 0--Elizabeth Norwood had three goals in a West Valley League game at El Camino Real.
Sisters Maytal and Mimi Schvartz also scored for El Camino Real (6-2-1, 5-1).
Cleveland 2, Granada Hills 1--Angela Veliz had a goal and an assist for the Cavaliers (7-3-3, 2-2-2) in a West Valley League game at Granada Hills.
Agoura 3, Newbury Park 1--Mollie Taylor had two assists and the Chargers (12-3, 8-1) won a Marmonte League game at Agoura.
BOYS’ SOCCER
Hart 6, Burbank 4--Chris Ciccone scored the tying and go-ahead goals for the Indians (16-4-2, 5-1-1), who overcame 2-0 and 4-2 deficits in a Foothill League game at Hart.
Harvard-Westlake 3, Alemany 1--Everett Wong, Matt Kramer and Jeff Clifford scored for the Wolverines in a Mission League match at Harvard-Westlake.
Santa Paula 3, Calabasas 1--Jorge Paniagua scored two of his three goals in overtime and the Cardinals (13-6-2, 4-2-0) upset the Coyotes (15-1-1, 4-1) in a Frontier League game at Calabasas.
El Camino Real 6, Taft 1--Jason Lara scored twice and Mauricio Ocampo had a goal and two assists for the Conquistadors, ranked No. 3, in a West Valley League game at Taft.
MEN’S VOLLEYBALL
BYU def. Cal State Northridge, 15-11, 15-12, 15-5--The seventh-ranked Cougars beat the Matadors for the seventh consecutive time in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match at Provo, Utah.
