Freeway Congestion

Re “Council Orders Prescription to Decongest the 101,” Jan. 8.

The northbound San Diego Freeway transition road to the westboound Ventura Freeway has to be unique for two reasons. First, it is one of the few freeway interchanges that allows on-flowing street traffic into the transisiton roads. The classic interchange is a cloverleaf with only freeway traffic in the interchange. And second, it has the only onramp traffic (from Sepulveda Boulevard, south of Ventura Boulevard) that allows street onramp traffic to travel north, east and west.

One of the quick, cheap, effective traffic congestion reducers would be to clsoe the Sepulveda Boulevard onramp. It wouldn’t help the east-west flow or the southern flow, but it would reduce the problem of being in line on the freeway coming down the mountain to the interchange. Who ever heard of onramp taffic crossing two freeway lands to transistion to the freeway of their choice while freeway traffic has to slow to allow them to cross?
