Mann Helps Foothill Past Rosary

Kristen Mann, whose 34 points a week ago were overshadowed by Giuliana Mendiola’s 55 in a loss to El Toro, had another big game Saturday. This time, Mann’s performance stood out.

Mann had 25 points, 15 rebounds and five assists to lead eighth-ranked Foothill to a 61-50 victory over No. 10 Rosary in the Chino Hills Ayala girls’ basketball tournament.

Chavaughn Brown scored 14 points for No. 8 Foothill (15-7).

Maggie Barnett scored 24 points for Rosary (15-8).

In other tournament games:

No. 6 Esperanza 57, Diamond Bar 41--Bethany Blair scored 22 points and Ashley Van Kurin had 14 for Esperanza (17-5).

Ventura 75, No. 9 Santa Margarita 46--Colleen O’Leary scored 18 points on six three-pointers for Santa Margarita (17-4). Sophomore reserve Jenni Dooley scored 19 points, including five three-point baskets, for Ventura (20-1).

In nonleague girls’ basketball:

Aliso Niguel 67, Ocean View 31--Nikia Hastie scored 18 points and Julia Pederson added 15 points and nine assists for visiting Aliso Niguel (13-9). Andrina Valenzuela had 12 points for Ocean View.

Corona del Mar 48, Newport Harbor 21--Kristen McCoy scored 13 points for Corona del Mar (19-4).

University 43, Dana Hills 32--Reagan Anders had 12 points and 17 rebounds and Kirsten von Tungeln had 16 rebounds and five blocks for host University (9-13).

Westminster 67, Huntington Beach 57--Diana Hernandez scored 30 points, 18 in the second half, to lead host Westminster (17-5). Amy Sanders had 30 points and 13 rebounds for Huntington Beach (11-10).

In nonleague boys’ basketball:

No. 1 Mater Dei 87, University 63--Mike Strawberry scored 24 points, Cedric Bozman had 14 points and seven assists and Harrison Schaen had 11 points and 16 rebounds for Mater Dei (24-1). Strawberry was 12 for 16 from the field. University’s Andy Lawrence scored 27 points, including four three-pointers.

No. 8 Santa Margarita 60, Los Angeles Verbum Dei 53--Lenny Collins made six of six free throws in the fourth quarter and finished with 15 points for Santa Margarita (19-4). R.J. Socci led the Eagles with 17 points .

In the Katella girls’ water polo tournament:

Bell Gardens 13, No. 10 Rosary 6--Melissa Cardenas scored seven goals for Bell Gardens in the title game. Bell Gardens led 6-1 after one quarter. Natalie Golda scored three goals and Mallory Anderson had two for Rosary (14-5). Rosary defeated Katella, 7-2, in the semifinals. Rosary’s Olivia Ramirez was named tournament MVP.

In nonleague girls’ water polo:

No. 8 Santa Margarita 12, Fountain Valley 6--Clare Peyrebrune scored four goals to lead host Santa Margarita (12-5), which led, 7-1, at the half.

In the Laguna Hills wrestling tournament:

Laguna Hills wins--Ian Harris pinned his opponent at 137 pounds in 1 minute 57 seconds, helping Laguna Hills win the team title with 185 points. Harris was named most valuable wrestler of the lower weights. University’s Franciso Gamboa, who pinned his opponent at 191 pounds in 1:03, was the top wrestler in the upper weights.
