Two people were killed Saturday in separate Lancaster traffic accidents, authorities said.

Lucia Saavedra, 71, of Lancaster was struck by an oncoming car as she attempted to cross the street about 10:20 a.m., Lt. Steven Fredericks of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said.

Saavedra was walking in a marked crosswalk along Avenue I when she was clipped by a 1990 Honda Civic, Fredericks said.

The driver, 17-year-old Jordy Carlon of Lancaster, did not see Saavedra because two other vehicles stopped at the intersection blocked his view, Fredericks said.

Saavedra was rushed to a nearby hospital, where she was pronounced dead, authorities said.

“The light had changed for the motorists and the victim was not able to get across in time,” Fredericks said.

The crash was still under investigation Saturday, Fredericks said.

In the second fatality, Roger Williams, 51, of Lancaster was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence in the death of a motorcyclist shortly before 2 a.m. Saturday, Fredericks said.

Steven Matthew Stephenson, 43, of Lancaster was killed when he was thrown from his motorcycle.

Stephenson was traveling west on Avenue I when his motorcycle collided with a pickup truck that had just pulled onto the street from a parking lot, Fredericks said.

The victim suffered massive chest injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The street was closed for more than five hours as investigators examined the accident scene.

Williams, booked into County Jail on suspicion of felony drunk driving involving a fatality, is being held in lieu of $50,000 bail, Fredericks said.
