Fire Burns 250 Acres of Brush Near Forest
A brush fire scorched about 250 acres north of Santa Clarita on Wednesday, burning for more than five hours as firefighters struggled to contain it.
Driven by a 10 mph wind, the fire began about 3:50 p.m. near Elizabeth Lake Road and Munz Ranch Road and steadily spread west, said Inspector Mike Tolbert of the Los Angeles County Fire Department.
At one point more than 80 firefighters formed a line a quarter mile long to stop the blaze. Three water-dropping helicopters also joined the fight, Tolbert said.
One man from an inmate camp crew was slightly injured battling the fire. He was hit in the foot with a sharp tool used to cut brush, Tolbert said.
The fire raged over open hillsides near Angeles National Forest, but did not damage any structures.
By 9 p.m. firefighters had contained the flames, stopping it from spreading though the fire continued to burn, Supervising Fire Dispatcher Phil Ulloa said.
