A police captain who worked his way up from a patrol officer has been named as police chief for the city of South Gate.

Capt. Doug Christ, who has worked for the department since 1973, will replace Chief George Troxcil, who is retiring Saturday, according to city officials.

The South Gate City Council unanimously approved Christ’s promotion this week, and a swearing-in ceremony is scheduled Tuesday.
