* Rio Mesa High is hosting passing and linemen’s tournaments Saturday.

Competing in the passing tournament are Agoura, Antelope Valley, Buena, Littlerock, Rio Mesa, Santa Paula, Thousand Oaks, Alhambra, Bakersfield Highland, Righetti, San Marcos and Silverado. Games begin at 9:30 a.m.

Teams in the linemen’s tournament include Agoura, Antelope Valley, Buena, Chatsworth, Granada Hills, Littlerock, Rio Mesa, Royal, Santa Paula and Thousand Oaks. The linemen’s tournament begins at 9 a.m. and consists of 185-pound bench press, rock toss, tire toss, relay race, heavy bag relay and tug of war. The final event begins at 1:15 p.m.

SOCCER

* Andy Silva has been selected boys’ coach at Royal High, replacing Kevin Corley, who resigned after nine seasons.

Corley guided the Highlanders to Southern Section Division I titles in 1995 and 1997. He and his family are moving to Colorado Springs, Colo., next month.

Silva, Royal softball coach the last eight years, will relinquish that position to focus on the boys’ soccer job. No softball replacement has been selected.

Silva coached boys’ soccer at Simi Valley High from 1979-80 to 1992-93 and led the Pioneers to nine Marmonte League titles and berths in Southern Section 4-A Division finals in 1986 and 1990.

TENNIS

* Lester Cook of Sherman Oaks defeated Robert Yim of Glendale, 6-2, 3-6, 6-4, in the round of 16 Thursday in the U.S. Tennis Assn. Boys’ 16 Claycourt Championships at Woodmont Country Club in Rockville, Md.

Cook will play Matt Cloer of Linville, N.C., in the quarterfinals today. Cloer beat Shannon-Patrick Buck of Dover, Del., 7-5, 6-1, in the round of 16.

Cook and Derrick Bauer of Marina del Rey reached the doubles quarterfinals on a default by Jesse Ferlianto of Canyon Country and Brian Swatt of Beverly Hills.

Adrian Mardyks of Camarillo and Malcolm Scatliffe of San Bernardino outlasted Jordan Dolberg of Penbroke Pines, Fla., and Adam Fass of Parkland, Fla., 2-6, 6-3, 7-6 (3).

* Samantha Hammond of Westlake Village defeated Tracy Lin of Anaheim, 6-4, 6-2, to win the girls’ singles title of the U.S. Tennis Assn. National Open Championships on Thursday at the Lakewood Tennis Center.

Stephanie Vallejos of Benicia and Meghan Wolfgram of Granite Bay beat third-seeded Lin and Celia Durkin of Woodland Hills, 6-3, 6-1, for the girls’ doubles title.

BASEBALL

* Gabe Cohen, a 12-year-old right fielder for Encino Little League, hit three home runs Wednesday to help defeat Northridge, 9-6, in nine innings in the championship game of the District 40 tournament.

* Pitcher Mike Frick of Cal State Northridge is 3-0 with a 1.93 earned-run average in the Cape Cod League.

VOLLEYBALL

* Shannon Martin has been hired as varsity coach at Hart. She was an assistant coach last season.
