Haloossim Resigns as Coach

Brian Haloossim, who built the Campbell Hall boys’ basketball program into a Southern Section Division V power in three seasons as coach, resigned Thursday.

He will be replaced by assistant Cleveland Jackson.

Haloossim, 27, will become director of development at the North Hollywood private school and pursue a graduate degree.

Campbell Hall was 58-29 under Haloossim and reached the Southern Section quarterfinals and semifinals in each of the last two seasons.

Jackson, 28, has been a Campbell Hall assistant for three years. He played basketball at Georgia.

* Shaina Zaidi, who averaged 14.5 points as a freshman for the Burroughs girls’ basketball team last season, has transferred to Marlborough, an all-girls school in Los Angeles.

FOOTBALL

* Eric Nelson, former defensive lineman at Crespi High, has made the team at the University of Notre Dame as a walk-on.

BASEBALL

* Clint Kofmehl, pitcher for the Van Nuys Show Ball American Legion team, did not receive medical clearance to pitch in the state tournament in Yountville.

Kofmehl, a former Crespi High star who has pitched only three innings this summer because of a shoulder injury, was cleared to begin rehabilitation.

Van Nuys (29-2) will play defending state champion Danville in a first-round game in the double-elimination tournament at 12:30 p.m. Saturday.

* First baseman Brandon Voorhees, who played at Simi Valley High and Moorpark College, has committed to Chico State.

* Randy Curtis, an All-Frontier League first baseman from Calabasas, has committed to Nevada Las Vegas.

* Shortstop Nate Wright, who played at Saugus High and Biola, has signed with the Dodgers and reported to the club’s rookie league affiliate in Yakima, Wash.

* Tim Leveque, a former Crespi pitcher who is a sophomore at Michigan, made the all-star team in the New England Collegiate Baseball League this summer.

Leveque, a right-hander, was 2-5 with a 2.50 earned-run average for the Torrington (Conn.) Twisters.

SOCCER

* Jared Weinryt, a former Chaminade High midfielder, has committed to Massachusetts.

Weinryt, 19, who trained in Holland with several top youth teams, was a two-time All-Mission League selection.
