Jeff Reed picked the perfect time to a hitless streak.

Reed, hitless in his last 14 at-bats, hit a two-run, two-out double in a three-run 10th inning Monday night to rally the Chicago Cubs past the Arizona Diamondbacks, 4-3, at Wrigley Field.

“I was just glad I got a hit, No. 1,” Reed said. “And that we won the game. We’ll take it any way we can get it.”

Reed hit a hanging slider off Matt Mantei (1-1) deep into the corner in right field. Andy Fox, who had entered in the ninth in a double-switch, couldn’t get to the ball in time. Sammy Sosa scored, and he stayed at home waving wildly as pinch-runner Eric Young brought home the winning run all the way from first.

“It was pretty bleak for awhile,” Cub Manager Don Baylor said. “Our offense was shut down and they gave us one more time. Against their closer, it’s a big win for us.”

It is also another bad road loss for Arizona. The Diamondbacks have played seven consecutive one-run games on the road and lost all but one.
