Rocker a No-Show With Richmond

John Rocker was a no-show Tuesday on his first day as a member of the Richmond (Va.) Braves.

Rocker, assigned to the triple-A team by the Atlanta Braves on Monday, has three days to report. Speculation was that he would join the team tonight.

Twelve players from UCLA were selected in major league baseball’s amateur draft, breaking the NCAA record of 11 set by USC in 1998. UCLA’s previous high was 10 players drafted in 1991. Second baseman Chase Utley was selected by Philadelphia in the first round with the 15th overall pick. Other Bruins selected Monday: Pitcher Rob Henkel, third round, Florida; first baseman Garrett Atkins, fifth round, Colorado; outfielder Bill Scott, eighth round, Milwaukee; pitcher Ryan Carter, eighth round, Philadelphia; catcher Forrest Johnson, 13th round, Detroit; outfielder Charles Merricks, 17th round, Colorado; pitcher Chad Cislak, 19th round, Cleveland; outfielder Nick Lyon, 20th round, Tampa Bay. Bruins selected Tuesday were catcher Ryan Hamill in the 25th round by St. Louis; outfielder Brian Baron, 46th round, Minnesota; outfielder Freddie Mitchell, 50th round, Chicago White Sox. . . . One day after beating the Dodgers’ Kevin Brown, pitcher Ryan Glynn was sent back to triple-A Oklahoma by the Texas Rangers. The Rangers recalled right-hander Jonathan Johnson from Oklahoma. . . . Randy Johnson (bad shoulder) will throw from the mound today and if all goes well, could return to the Arizona rotation Friday against the Angels. . . . San Diego left-hander Sterling Hitchcock will be sidelined 12 to 18 months after undergoing surgery to repair ligament damage in his pitching elbow.

The St. Louis Cardinals will be without Mark McGwire, Fernando Vina and Ray Lankford until at least Friday. All are sidelined by hamstring injuries. . . . Center fielder Anthony Gwynn, the son of San Diego’s Tony Gwynn, was drafted by the Atlanta Braves with the 1,000th pick of the draft. Gwynn is from Poway High in San Diego.
