Man With Pellet Gun Is Slain by L.A. Officer in Pacific Palisades
A Los Angeles police officer shot and killed a 30-year-old man in Pacific Palisades on Thursday after the man confronted officers with what they initially believed was a handgun, a department spokesman said.
The weapon turned out to be a pellet gun, said Officer Jason Lee, an LAPD spokesman.
Police went to the 17300 block of Sunset Boulevard about 5 p.m. after receiving a call that a man was there with a gun, Lee said.
“The officers ordered him to drop the gun in English and Spanish, but he failed to comply,” Lee said.
Instead, the man approached the officers still holding the weapon, Lee said.
“The officers were in fear for their lives, and one fired one round from a shotgun,” Lee said.
The suspect, who was hit in the chest, was taken to UCLA Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. His name was not released pending notification of relatives.
Lee said investigators had not determined what the man was doing in the area and said he appeared to be under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
