Sheriff’s deputies Friday arrested a 30-year-old man in the slaying of a county employee and the attempted suffocation of her 8-year-old daughter.

Barry Mosley, 30, who had been under surveillance, was stopped and arrested about 4:30 p.m. as he was about to drive onto the Harbor Freeway, said Sgt. Brenda Cambra. Mosley was booked at the Lennox station on suspicion of murdering Adrienne Reed, 25, plus attempted murder and sex-related crimes.

Reed, a clerk for the Department of Social Services, met a man in a liquor store on Century Boulevard on Wednesday and invited him back to her home on 104th Street to watch the Lakers game, deputies said.

Reed’s daughter went to sleep in her bedroom, but awoke about 1:30 a.m. and found her mother unconscious, deputies said. The man then tried to suffocate the girl, who passed out. She later awoke and called her grandmother, who alerted authorities.

It was unclear exactly what led detectives to Mosley, who lives about three blocks from Reed. Mosley was described as having an extensive arrest record, but no specifics were given.
