Parade? Mum Is the Word

Share

The phrase “City Hall secret” is normally something of an oxymoron. So-called secrets seep out of the building like water through a sieve.

But there is one subject no one at City Hall will even breathe a word of: the day of a victory parade if the Lakers win the NBA championship.

Obviously, the city isn’t fast enough on its feet to throw an impromptu parade. Somebody, somewhere is planning a celebration.

But city officials certainly don’t want to give the Indiana Pacers any motivational fodder for their bulletin board.

One thing appears certain: if the Lakers win tonight, the victory parade would not be until next week, probably Monday. If a championship-clinching victory comes Monday, a good bet is that the parade will be held Wednesday.

With so many downtown streets ripped up and closed for construction, one route being considered starts at the city’s Department of Water and Power building at 1st and Hope streets. The parade would then go 1 1/2 miles south on Figueroa to Staples Center.
