Tewell Good to Last Shot for Win
Doug Tewell made a three-foot birdie putt on the final hole Sunday for a one-stroke victory over Larry Nelson and Walter Hall in the Senior PGA Tour’s SBC Championship.
Tewell, who also birdied No. 17, closed with a five-under-par 67 for a 14-under 202 total on the Dominion Country Club. He earned $165,000 for his second victory of the year.
“I said this morning, ‘Someone’s going to have to birdie the 18th hole.’ I’m just glad it was me,” said Tewell, who had an eagle, five birdies and two bogeys Sunday.
Tewell, 50, a four-time winner on the PGA Tour, also won the PGA Seniors’ Championship in April.
“I wanted to be more animated at 18, but I couldn’t do it,” Tewell said. “I was in shock.”
Larry Nelson, playing in the group ahead of Tewell and Hall, birdied the 18th for a 66 that left the three tied at 13 under.
Hall, who shot a 69, hit a seven-iron shot that stopped 15 feet from the pin on the 545-yard, par-five 18th, and Tewell followed with a wedge shot to set up the three-foot birdie putt.
