One dog died and another suffered minor injuries when the pair slid down a steep embankment Friday afternoon while chasing coyotes in the Santa Rosa Valley, authorities said.

The incident occurred about 12:30 p.m. on a brush-covered hillside in the 10000 block of Presilla Road between Camarillo and Moorpark. The dogs belonged to homeowner Don Thomas.

According to county fire officials, Thomas, his wife and son suffered cuts and scraps when they hiked down the hillside to retrieve the dogs.

Firefighters were called to the scene when Thomas got stuck about 30 feet from the roadway while carrying one of his dogs, a black Labrador. It died in Thomas’ arms, allegedly from heat stroke and exhaustion.

The second dog, a brown pointer named Coco, was found by Thomas, his son and firefighters about 150 feet down the hillside. Using ropes, firefighters transported the dog to safety, said Fire Capt. Bob Ameche.

“Unfortunately, we lost one dog, but we are happy we were able to save and rescue the other,” Ameche said.
