Heinberg Reaches Final in Boys’ 18 Sectional Tennis

Top-seeded Ryan Heinberg of Agoura Hills defeated Dante Haynes of Compton, 6-4, 6-3, in the boys’ 18 semifinals at the 98th Southern California junior sectional tennis tournament Saturday at Los Caballeros Racquet Club in Fountain Valley.

Heinberg, the boys’ 16 sectional champion last year, will play No. 2-seeded Paul Warkentin of Santa Barbara in the final today.

Heinberg and Amir Marandy of Woodland Hills lost in the doubles semifinals to top-seeded Jeff Kazarian and Scott Spencer, both of Rolling Hills Estates, 6-4, 6-3.

Eric Riley of Rancho Santa Fe defeated Gary Sacks of Calabasas, 6-0, 6-0, in the boys’ 14 semifinals. Alexa Glatch of Irvine beat Jessica Nguyen of Chatsworth, 6-3, 6-2, in the girls’ 12 division, and No. 4-seeded Ryan Thacher of Studio City defeated Fabian Matthews of Fallbrook, 6-3, 6-2, in the boys’ 10 division.

No. 3-seeded Brian Morton of Costa Mesa and Rylan Rizza of Rancho Palos Verdes defeated No. 2-seeded Warkentin and Quinn Borchard of Camarillo in the boys’ 18 division.

GOLF

* Craig Steinberg of Van Nuys shot one-over-par 72 Saturday at Rancho Santa Fe Golf Club in the third round of the Southern California Amateur Championship and moved into a tie for fifth place, eight strokes behind leader Steve Conway of Dove Canyon.

Conway, an 18-year-old who recently graduated from Santa Margarita High and set a tournament record with a 65 in the CIF-SCGA high school tournament, shot 69 for a three-day total of 208 and a two-shot lead over Darin Sullivan of San Diego.

Steinberg is trying for a record-tying fifth title. Tim Hogarth of Northridge, the two-time L.A. City champion, shot 73 and is tied for seventh at 217.

Scott McGhion of Bermuda Dunes, runner-up last year, is third at 213. Terry Noe of Fullerton, the 1994 U.S. Junior champion, is fourth at 214.

TRACK AND FIELD

Sammy Johnson won the long jump with a mark of 20-0 1/4 and the triple jump at 37-7 to lead the Birmingham High boys’ team to the L.A. Watts Summers Games championship with 76 points.

Birmingham also won the girls’ title with 57 points. Vincetta Mendola won the long jump at 17-3 3/4 and was second in the high jump at 4-8, and Vonnie Fulford won the 100 meters in 12.47 seconds and was second in the 200 in 26.61 for the Patriots.

SWIMMING

* Junior Elizabeth Inai of El Camino Real High, City Section champion in the 200-yard individual medley and the 100 backstroke, won the girls’ open 200-meter backstroke in 2:31.02 in the Industry Hills Aquatic Club meet Thursday at the Industry Hills Aquatics Complex.

Inai, a member of the Calabasas-based Combined Competitive Aquatics team, placed third in the open 200 individual medley in 2:37.44.

Kosuke Amano of Villanova Prep and the Buenaventura Swim Club won the boys’ 200 free in 2:02.51. Buenaventura teammate Eric Ramirez was third in the 800 meters (8:58.17).

Peter McVey of Quartz Hill and Canyons Aquatics placed second in the boys’ open 200 backstroke (2:21.70) and was third in the 200 individual medley (2:21.38).
