Sultry Santa Ana Sets Record at 96

Share

The mercury soared across the Southland on Sunday, hitting a record high in Santa Ana.

The temperature reached 96 degrees, surpassing the 1976 record by three degrees, said Wes Etheredge, a forecast meteorologist with WeatherData Inc., which provides forecast information to The Times. The norm is 78 degrees.

Temperatures mounted throughout Orange County, with Anaheim hitting 100 degrees and John Wayne Airport reaching 91 degrees. It’s unknown if any of these are record-breaking temperatures since the county’s only official observation station is in Santa Ana.

The unusually warm weather was caused by an “upper-level disturbance”--a low-pressure system about 20,000 feet above Earth.

“What you get is sunny skies and warmer-than-normal temperatures,” Etheredge said.

The marine layer cooled the coast. Newport Beach reported 73 degrees.
