Notre Dame Advances as Pearson Has 37

Cody Pearson scored 37 points to lead Notre Dame High to a 70-65 victory over Fremont on Tuesday night in a quarterfinal of the War on the Floor basketball tournament at Taft High.

The Knights play Inglewood today at 5:15 p.m. Inglewood defeated Hoover, 99-65, in a quarterfinal Tuesday.

Pearson made all 16 of his free throws. Michael Luderer scored 18 points for Notre Dame.

In the other semifinal, Upland, a 65-47 winner over Sylmar, plays Clovis West, a 76-64 winner over Simi Valley, at 4 p.m.

The championship game is scheduled for 7:45 p.m.

SWIMMING

* Senior-to-be Amy Jones of Cleveland High placed sixth in the women’s 100-meter freestyle Sunday and was 13th in the 50-meter freestyle Saturday at Mission Viejo Meet of Champions at Marguerite Recreation Complex in Mission Viejo.

Jones finished the 100 in 58.40 seconds and clocked 27.57 in the 50. She made the bonus final of the 400 freestyle, finishing 23rd in 4:33.85.

Maureen Farrell of Alemany High placed ninth in the women’s 100 backstroke in 1:05.26 and was 14th in the 200 backstroke in 2:21.83.

Joel Everman of USC and Notre Dame High finished 19th in the men’s 1,500 freestyle in 16:15.81, while Ian Prichard, a graduate of Buena High, was 12th at 16:24.22.

Christine Creek, a sophomore-to-be at Royal, placed 17th in the 200 breaststroke in 2:39.98.

TENNIS

* Ryan Heinberg of Agoura Hills defeated Paul Warkentin of Santa Barbara, 6-7, 7-6, 6-4, to win the boys’ 18 division championship of the 98th Southern California sectional tournament Sunday at Los Caballeros Racquet Club in Fountain Valley.

Heinberg won the boys’ 16 championship last year.

In the girls’ 18 doubles final, Judith DeVera of Carson and Lindsey Nelson of Orange defeated Jieun Jacobs of Valencia and Meagan Caldwell of Encinitas, 6-3, 7-6.

* Lester Cook of Sherman Oaks defeated Matt Loucks of Irvine, 6-3, 6-4, to win the Whittier tournament boys’ 16 division championship Tuesday at the Jack Kramer Club in Rancho Palos Verdes.

SOCCER

* Erin Misaki, a graduate of Hart High, had four goals and two assists in five games for the AGSS Mirage in the Western Regional under-19 women’s tournament in Pleasanton last week.

The Mirage lost, 1-0, in double overtime to the Colorado Rush in the final.

Misaki played at Portland last season, where she was All-West Coast Conference and selected a freshman All-American by Soccer Buzz. She is one of 30 players selected to try out for the 18-member West team that will compete in the U.S. Olympic Festival.

TRACK AND FIELD

* Several world-class competitors will be at Cal State Northridge on Friday and Saturday for decathlon and heptathlon events, which are the final qualifying meets for the U.S. Olympic trials.

The meets begin at 11 a.m. each day.

There are 20 decathletes and 15 heptathletes entered, including Darrin Steele, Darwin Vandehoef and 1996 Olympian Chris Huffins in the decathlon and two-time NCAA champion Tiffany Lott-Hogan in the heptathlon.

BASKETBALL

* Bryan Camacho has been selected girls’ coach and athletic director at Bell-Jeff High.

Camacho is a graduate of Bell-Jeff and former assistant boys’ coach at Chaminade High, replaces Jess Rodriguez, who retired as coach after last season.

* The 16-team San Fernando Valley Referees tournament will be held today through Saturday at Crespi High.

Games begin at noon and continue through 9 p.m. each day.

North Hollywood High is defending champion. Notre Dame, Harvard-Westlake and Alemany are entered.

BASEBALL

* Rafael Arroyo, a graduate of Monroe High, has signed with Cal State Los Angeles.
