U.S. Junior Golfers Lead Tournament in Sweden

Yorba Linda’s Nico Bollini and Fullerton’s Angela Rho helped a contingent of U.S. junior golfers take an 8 1/2-4 1/2 lead in the first day of competition at the IZZO Cup at Ulna Golf Course in Stockholm, Sweden.

Rho, with partner Catherine Cartwright of Bonita Springs, Fla., defeated Lill Kristin Saether and Helga Rut Svanbergsdottirof Scandinavia, 3 & 2, in the morning four-ball matches, before losing with partner James Oh of Lakewood in the mixed foursome, 2-up.

Bollini and Sacramento’s Jason Hartwick lost, 1-up, in their four-ball match. However, Bollini rebounded with Cartwright in mixed to defeat Scandinavia’s Anders Hofvander and Johanna Andersson, 5 & 3, in mixed.

The three-day match play competition hosts the top 16 junior golfers from the U.S. against the best 16 from Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden. The format includes singles, four-ball and mixed foursome matches. The first team to reach 22 points wins the IZZO Cup.

* Six sophomores from Saddleback College have accepted scholarships to play golf at four-year universities, the college announced.

Brian Miller and Scott Henderson will play at San Diego State. Miller, who attended Madras High in Oregon, led the Gauchos with a 74.4 average. Henderson, a Santa Margarita graduate, averaged 76.3.

Others signing are Lonnie Charleson (Trabuco Hills), who will attend Cal State San Bernardino, Bob Sauer (Mission Viejo) will go to San Jose State, Nick Fritz (Santa Margarita) will attend Santa Clara and Damien Paterson (Perth, Australia) will play at Fort Lewis State in Colorado.

SOFTBALL

Hope International has added three softball players to its roster for next season, a school spokesman said Wednesday. Lindsey Terry, a pitcher from Colville High in Washington; Alicia Fazio, a catcher from Atascadero High and Lori Mapes, an infielder from Riverside Poly High have signed letters of intent.

VOLLEYBALL

The Saddleback Valley Volleyball Club 18-and-under team won the Boys’ Classic it hosted last weekend. Saddleback is led by Woodbridge setter Jason Liljestrom, who has committed to Princeton, El Toro’s Jimmy Pelzel, who has committed to UC Irvine, and Mission Viejo’s Jeff Taylor.
